Portugal Algarve - Car Hire Alvor

With your car rental in Algarve, Portugal, the picturesque villa of Alvor is a mere 5-minute drive from Praia da Rocha. Alvor is situated on the eastern edge of the wide Baia de Lagos (the Bay of Lagos ) nestled on a hillside between Portimão and Lagos . The flat-roofed houses face a protected harbour on the estuary of the river Alvor. This estuary of four rivers makes for a shallow bird-filled lagoon. Because Alvor has an extremely sensitive ecosystem, attempts have been made to protect the surrounding area from tourist development; these attempts have only been partially successful. A car rental in Algarve will show you that all roads from the top of the hill lead down to riverfronts or the sea.

Fishing was the inspiration behind the carvings that decorate the portal of the 16 th century parish church. Local fishermen join the wading birds in the tidal estuary, searching for razor shells and clams, which are sold in the fish market on the harbour. These are the principal ingredients of the seafood dishes served in local bars and restaurants. The area around the old fish market has been greatly developed over the past five years. It now has a wide waterfront promenade, with restaurants and bars where one can sit and watch the fishing boats. Behind the fish market is the old life boat station, which is well worth a visit. Near the waterfront promenade there is a large parking area, where you can leave your car hire from Alvor. At the western end of the promenade, a paved footpath leads to the marshland, saltpans and mudflats that make the estuary a paradise for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers. It is an important stopover for migrating birds.

Traditionally a fishing village, Alvor has grown over the last 40 years but, instead of shooting upwards like many other resorts, it has spread outwards. Alvor has, however, managed to retain much of its original style, with low buildings and open surroundings and the lagoon, which is a specially protected area of natural beauty.

The centre of Alvor has two distinct personalities: one caters for tourists, the other one for residents. Many of the expatriates who live here fell in love with the place as holidaymakers and then returned to settle permanently. They combine with the Portuguese population to form a convivial community that welcomes the annual wave of tourism. Alvor, however, is much more than a holiday resort.

The main thoroughfare is pedestrianised  and town centre parking can be a problem. Outside of the centre are large parking areas where you can leave your rental car of Alvor car hire. A two-hour walk, with plenty of opportunities to rest n the shade and absorb the atmosphere, takes in the major sites.

The parish church, Igreja Matriz Divini Salvador, dominates the town. Famed for its elaborate Manueline architecture, it dates back to the 16th century, was rebuilt 200 years later and boasts one of the most beautiful doorways in the Algarve. The interior is cool and peaceful and there are many interesting carvings and panels.

Alvor´s main beach is just five minutes walk from the town. It is four and a half miles of wide open sand, backed by dunes and has plenty of facilities. There are usually life guards on duty and sun umbrellas and sun loungers can be hired at a daily rate. Car parks, where you can leave your rental car of Alvor car hire, are close to the beach.

The beach is popular with Portuguese holidaymakers who usually arrive in the Algarve in August, but due to its size Alvor praia is never packed.

Tres Irmãos beach, further east, is mostly backed by cliffs, with huge rocks scattered along the shoreline.

Algarve´s golf courses are among the best of the world. This region is known as a true golf paradise and widely regarded as the foremost golf holiday destination in Europe. At the last count there were 22 golf complexes, 32 separate courses and over 549 widely differing holes to play along the south coast of the Algarve – and another two complexes and 45 holes within easy driving distance just over the Spanish border.

Golf is an all-year around sport but the remain season is from October to May.

There are lessons from professionals available on all Lagos courses. Unlike in Britain, all of the Algarve´s courses are open for visitors. Most of them require a handicap certificate; all insist on a dress code and proper course etiquette.

Famous golf courts in the Alvor área area:

The Penina course is the grandfather of courses in the Algarve. It was the first golf course to be built in the Algarve, back in 1966, and is considered to be the brilliant masterpiece of Sir Henry Cotton. The quality and the success of this course encouraged the subsequent construction of many other courses that now exist in the region. The Championship Course of Penina has hosted several of the Portuguese Open Championships. Originally paddy fields for rice growing rice has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. This flat parkland type course with almost four hundred thousand trees, many bunkers, with wide greens and a vast tee area, making this a real championship course. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

A new lake has been built to protect the green of hole 5. The undulations on the fairway of hole 9, five new bunkers together with more water around the green of hole 13 (which became a small island), deeper bunkers and new tees are features added to the original layout.

Penina also features two 9 hole courses by Sir Henry Cotton: The Resort Course, a pleasant Par 35 with 2,987 metres; and The Academy Course, a Par 30 with 1,851 metres.

Alto Golf:  This course is located between the town of Portimão and the sea and close enough to the latter to give the player an occasional sea view. A simple par-3 opens your round but it is deceiving to what is in store. The course is considered a good test of a player’s ability with strategic bunkers, dog-legs, elevated greens and well placed trees. A further noteworthy challenge is the par-5 on the sixteenth that is considered to be one of the longest holes in Europe. This 18 hole, Par 72 golf course, was the last to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. The winding fairways and elevated greens reflect Sir Henry’s golfing philosophy of providing low handicap players with a testing game and still affording plenty of enjoyment for players at average club level and providing satisfaction and inspiration for beginners.

With breathtaking views of the Monchique Mountains and the western coastline, Morgado has one of the most natural golf settings in Portugal. The immediate main characteristic factor is its large greens which place demand on good putting skills. The course plays through rolling hills and the accuracy of the player's shot will be questioned by deep impressive bunkers. A further 18 hole course is already in the planning stage.
