Portugal Algarve - About Portimão

Located on the opposite side of the Arade River estuary from Ferragudo, Portimao is one of the Algarve´s main fishing ports and the settlement where tourism hasn´t yet stamped its indelible mark. You can cross the river with your hire car of Portimao car hire, over the old bridge. There is much local life as the catches are brought in at the city´s harbour where a long waterfront promenade, repaved and landscaped in 2002, allows for easy strolling.

The tantalising smell of grilled sardines rises above numerous atmospheric eateries just of the quayside (enter through a short tunnel under Rua Serpa Pinto) housed in the humble houses where the fisherman used to live. This is one of the best places to enjoy typical Algarvian seafood. Fresh sardines with salad and bread are irresistible to holidaymaking dinners.

With its quality shops, Portimão is an excellent place if you prefer real shops to those geared to tourists. Heading inland from the harbour, Rua Dr.João Vitorino, Rua Direita and Largo 1 de Dezembro offer plenty of choice. The latter is laid out as a park, with fountains and flower beds, and benches decorated with azulejo pictures depicting events in Portuguese history.

The 1920s were a prosperous time for Portimão and many of the building lining the city centre roads were given decorative tileworks façades and wrought-iron balconies, reflecting the art nouveau designs that were then in vogue. The city has an underground parking in the centre, beneath the main streets, were you can park you hire car of Portimao car hire.

Famous golf courts in the Portimão área area:

The Penina course is the grandfather of courses in the Algarve. It was the first golf course to be built in the Algarve, back in 1966, and is considered to be the brilliant masterpiece of Sir Henry Cotton. The quality and the success of this course encouraged the subsequent construction of many other courses that now exist in the region. The Championship Course of Penina has hosted several of the Portuguese.

Open Championships. Originally paddy fields for rice growing rice has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. This flat parkland type course with almost four hundred thousand trees, many bunkers, with wide greens and a vast tee area, making this a real championship course. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

A new lake has been built to protect the green of hole 5. The undulations on the fairway of hole 9, five new bunkers together with more water around the green of hole 13 (which became a small island), deeper bunkers and new tees are features added to the original layout.

Penina also features two 9 hole courses by Sir Henry Cotton: The Resort Course, a pleasant Par 35 with 2,987 metres; and The Academy Course, a Par 30 with 1,851 metres.

Alto Golf:  This course is located between the town of Portimão and the sea and close enough to the latter to give the player an occasional sea view. A simple par-3 opens your round but it is deceiving to what is in store. The course is considered a good test of a player’s ability with strategic bunkers, dog-legs, elevated greens and well placed trees. A further noteworthy challenge is the par-5 on the sixteenth that is considered to be one of the longest holes in Europe. This 18 hole, Par 72 golf course, was the last to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. The winding fairways and elevated greens reflect Sir Henry’s golfing philosophy of providing low handicap players with a testing game and still affording plenty of enjoyment for players at average club level and providing satisfaction and inspiration for beginners.
